Who are the Top 150 Wine Tweeters?

The question of top wine tweeters has been attempted to be answered in a number of different ways.

Wine lists on the social media influence ranking engines are one way (Klout, Kred, and PeerIndex) but are very susceptible to gaming and don’t seem to have the mathematical genius and data grunt of Google’s algorithm and Facebook’s EdgeRank.

Ken Waggoner aka @alawine maintains a list of the Top 100 Global Wine Tweeters. VinTank has an automated Social Wine Index list that includes Twitter and Facebook. They look eminently sensible but I’m not quite sure how they are made up and VinTank’s doesn’t include wine bloggers and writers.

A Different Approach

So I thought I would take a different approach, I’d let six wine writers/bloggers/tweeters I respect, tell me, together. They are Jancis Robinson @JancisRobinson, Jamie Goode @jamiegoode and Robert McIntosh @thirstforwine from the UK, and Alder Yarrow @vinography, Steve Heimoff @SteveHeimoff and Tom Wark @tomcwark from the US. All of whom are active tweeters with a large number of followers who seem reasonably discerning of who they follow.

I’m using FollowerWonk a twitter analysis tool made by some savvy internet people to give me the data, and then analysing that in a spreadsheet. I am only looking at what twitter accounts they follow – not who follows them – and I am ignoring any influence score (which I don’t trust for gaming, math and data reasons).

Firstly the UK wine twitter team, hail Britannica

Jancis only follows 205 accounts which is going to help narrow the list down. Together the UK team follow 91 accounts.
Twitter Follows Overlap: Robert McIntosh, Jamie Goode, Jancis Robinson

All three do loads of ReTweets, @mentions and tweets with URLs so I’m pleased to say all are positive twitter community participants (indeed probably better than me).

Here are the top 30 (by follower #s) twitter handles they follow in common:

There is a link at the bottom of this post where you can view and download a spreadsheet of all the 91 common accounts followed by the UK team. This also gives full names, city, bio, follower #s, a (dodgy?) influence score, retweet%, @contacts, and URL tweets. You can slice and dice yourself and tell me what you think in the comments below (feel free to offer your own interpretation).

Next the US wine twitter team, hail to the Chief

These three are much more similar users but only follow 70 common twitter accounts.
Twitter Follows Overlap: Steve Heimoff, Alder Yarrow, Tom Wark

Their tweeting activity is quite different, possibly suggesting a job bias.

The Top 30 Wine Tweeters

Missing a few in the Bakers’s dozen so I think it would be better to add these to a consolidated UK and US team follows add in the team members which leaves us with the following Top 30 (sorted by followers):
garyvee
RandallGrahm
ablegrape
FrankBruni
JancisRobinson
WineDiarist
WineEnthusiast
Catavino
Marthalanefox
EricAsimov

Which is looking reasonably accurate – and avoids the gaming issue with the influence ranking websites.

The Top 150 Wine Tweeters

Here is all the data with the top 150 twitter accounts our experts follow. Best to click the + magnify button and scroll to the left to see them or download the spreadsheet (download link at the bottom of this viewer). The first two pages are All or the consolidated follows, the next 2 pages the UK team and the last page is the US team.

Looking at who the Experts Follow

So that’s my angle on the top wine tweeters. I’ve looked at who the experts follow. I suggest you (download) sort and filter that data to find tweeters who tend to follow, retweet lots (the key measurement of tweeting success or `resonance’), are willing to include URLs and perhaps follow people back. I suggest look to build relationships with them or at least follow what they say and ReTweet.

(Note if you are struggling with the spreadsheet, contact me.)

What’s your thoughts? Is the methodology misleading in some way? Is an important tweeter missed out?

Hi, I just noticed that the @alawine Top 100 Global Tweeters is not correctly linked. The link taks you to his list of To 100 Wineries.
